What is The Raskolnikov Project?

The Raskolnikov Project is an idea that has been bouncing around in my mind for a long time – a contemporary YA novel heavily influenced by Dostoevsky’s masterpiece, Crime & Punishment.

Finding myself being weighed down by the pressure of edits and rewrites and making my novel shine, I began searching for an outlet for all my pent-up creativity. And so this website was born.

Often when reading a book, it is impossible to see all the work that goes into making it what it is now. We don’t read the sloppy first drafts. We don’t see all the gaping plot holes the author didn’t anticipate as she wrote through the story the first time. What we see is the result of tons and tons of editing, rewriting, and polishing.

When reading the final version of a book, it is hard to imagine the mess it was at the beginning. As a writer, that can be disheartening at times. I know that all books started out in crappy draft form, but I can’t help but compare my own writing to the writing in these finished products. I thought it would be nice to see what a first draft looks like.

So I decided to put mine out there for everyone else to read.

I will be writing The Raskolnikov Project online, adding new installments as often as possible. It will be fun, and at times it will be ugly. What you see is what you get: chapters will go up in rough-draft form, no editing allowed; there is no outline – I will be discovering the story at the same time as you will.

Enjoy the book! I love you for reading it. :) (Now might I suggest you read the inspiration?)
